Mexicanah (Why the name?)
Well, hello there, dear Reader! Welcome to my new blog about my experience, as an expat living in Mexico. At the moment, I am in CDMX (the acronym used widely for Mexico City, also referred to as DF for "Distrito Federal" or the federal district). However, it might be, that eventually I move to other parts of the country, because I want to experience it all and currently my dream is to live in Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Baja California or some other paradise beach (of which there are plenty in this country). Curious to see how that's gonna evolve in the future! Hope you are too :) Although brought up inland (mainly), I've always had a longing for the sea, which eventually brought me to Alexandria, Egypt, where I spent five years (here's my blog about living in Egypt: http://going-to-alexandria.blogspot.mx/).
Why the name?
You might be wondering why I chose to call my new blog "Mexicanah" and what that even means. Those of you familiar with the prose of the Nigerian-American writer called Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie might already be thinking of her novel "Americanah". Dunno if she would like to be called "Nigerian-American" but that's how I see her. The novel is all about identity, long distance relationships, love, language and never fitting in. "Americanah" is a word used to describe those Nigerians returning home, changed by living in the US. The main hero, a Nigerian girl called Ifemelu, moves to the United States, where she starts a blog about race and then goes back to Nigeria, where she keeps another blog. All throughout she is trying to figure herself out, as much as the spaces she is in, always from the point of view of an outsider. Quite frankly, I got inspired by Ifemelu, the novel got me thinking on many levels and the love story moved me to tears. And so upon finishing the book, today I decided to start a blog about my experience here.
Should you choose to follow this blog, what might you expect? I don't know myself. Probably a lot of yoga, food and travel facts. Also some pictures. I like taking pictures, I like yoga, cooking and trying different local foods. I'm gonna try to make it more insightful than just another travel blog. I'm sure there must be thousands of travel blogs about Mexico. Mostly written by Americans, I'd expect. I'm gonna try to make mine a little bit personal, but not too much. Like Ifemelu. I struggle with that balance between making my public persona real, but also not too revealing. I'm always torn between posting pictures of everything on social media and not wanting anyone to know anything about me. I guess it's an inner conflict of our times, where almost everyone uses social media. We want o be popular, have millions of followers and yet we want our space and privacy. To eat the cake and have it still.
I'd love your feedback, questions and tips, so don't be shy with the comments. Let's see where this is gonna go, shall we?
Excellent idea to have a blog with all your life experiences in Mexico... Will be following it 😃
